Advocacy in Action
This month, God opened the door for me to spend time in Okinawa, supporting and advocating for individuals who have experienced exploitation, abuse, and domestic violence.
As a victim advocate, I walk alongside survivors during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. This can involve helping them navigate legal systems, connecting them with resources, accompanying them to appointments, assisting with safety planning, and simply being a consistent source of support and encouragement when they feel overwhelmed and alone.
One recent case involves a young woman from a different cultural and religious background who entered what was intended to be an arranged marriage. Instead of finding security and support, she became trapped in a situation involving claims of severe abuse. The case ultimately resulted in a criminal investigation and charges related to domestic violence, sexual assault, and other serious offenses.
My role isn’t to determine guilt or innocence, but to ensure that victims understand their rights, have access to resources, and do not have to face the legal process alone. In this particular case, I’ve helped the victim connect with legal assistance, navigate complex systems, understand her options, and find practical support as she seeks safety and stability.
Cases like this remind me that abuse, exploitation, and violence can affect people from every nation, culture, and faith background. They also remind me that every person is created in the image of God and deserves dignity, protection, and the opportunity to live free from fear.
While much of this work happens behind the scenes and must remain confidential, I’m continually reminded that God is at work even in the darkest situations. Beyond practical assistance, I seek opportunities to demonstrate Christ's love, compassion, and hope to those who have experienced profound trauma and betrayal.
My trip to Okinawa began as a time for renewal and relaxation. It became much more, but as I serve the Lord, I’m reminded that He works through us, people on the ground who want to share His love with those in desperate need. Every time we serve someone in need, we are serving God.
